Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza

The Pyramids of Giza are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These magnificent and grand structures have puzzled archaeologists for years. It is still unclear how they were built with such limited technology. There are over 100 pyramids in Egypt, built as royal tombs for ancient Egyptian kings, called pharaohs. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest and tallest pyramid, standing at 146 meters tall. It took 20 years, 100,000 people, and 2.3 million blocks of stone to build. Egyptologists believe it was built as the final resting place for Pharaoh Khufu around 4500 years ago. Inside the pyramid, in the king’s chamber, Pharaoh Khufu was buried with many treasures. Unlike other tombs, Khufu’s tomb has no decorations or hieroglyphics. The pyramid also has other rooms where family members were buried. Did you know that with all the modern tools we have today, it would still be hard to recreate the pyramids with the same precision? Archaeologists and scientists are amazed at how these huge structures were built. The pyramids were once smooth and shiny because they were covered in white polished limestone. The top of the pyramid was believed to be covered in gold, making it shine brightly under the Egyptian sun. Next to the pyramids is the Sphinx, one of the largest and oldest statues in the world. It has the body of a lion and the head of a person. The ancient world is always inspiring, showing us what human beings are capable of. Learning about the Great Pyramids of Giza makes us appreciate the incredible achievements of ancient civilizations.
