Sure! Alexandria has long been a popular spot for people seeking a break from the hot weather in Cairo. The ruling family of Egypt, including Khedive Abbas II, used to spend their summers there. In fact, Abbas II built a stunning place called Montazah along the coastline for this purpose.

But things changed in 1952 when the ruling family was removed from power during the Free Officers Revolution. Since then, Montazah and its beautiful gardens have become accessible to everyone. It’s now a well-maintained public park that offers a peaceful and attractive seaside experience. And the best part? You can enjoy all this for just 50 piasters.

Montazah includes two palaces. The first one, Al Salamlik, was originally built in 1892 as a hunting lodge for the Khedive and his friends. Later on, it was renovated to serve as a summer residence for the president. Hosni Mubarak even used it as his summer home until a new presidential residence was established in Sharm El Sheikh. Recently, Al Salamlik has been transformed into a luxurious hotel.

The larger palace, Al Haramlik, was built in 1932 by King Fuad, who was the last successor of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty. It boasts a unique architectural style that blends Turkish and Florentine influences. Today, Al Haramlik houses a museum that showcases the history and art of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty.

So, when you visit Alexandria, make sure to explore Montazah’s gardens, admire the elegance of Al Salamlik, and take a journey through history at Al Haramlik.
